Kiama has been using a blog for
internal communications for the last three years.
The blog has been a great success with staff using it as the major communications tool. It has been a great innovation for maintaining communications with our casual staff as it keeps them involved and “in the loop” for anything that might be
used in the library. None uses email internally anymore as the blog
has replaced email's use.
Being a small

The physical face-to-face Beyond the Hype Web 2.0 is now over, but this site will continue as a record of our discussions, but the real question is: Did we go beyond the hype of web 2.0?
I think that we did - the speakers presented a great diversity of topics and my overall feel from the event was that people agree that these technologies can have real value, but that the most important thing is your clients.
A few speakers mentioned tailoring web 2.0 to your staff, library an…

It's just after lunch - wasn't it just delicious (bit muggy thanks to the rain though) the last session is about to start.
The morning 'B' session offered up a lot of questions as well as answers to the three different topics discussed - Podcasting; Virtual research environments; Legal risks of some web 2.0 technologies.
Hopefully delegates got as much out of it as I did.
See you all later.......... beyond the hype !

Well, it's 4.40pm and the first day is nearly over. The morning session was not without some minor dramas - no camera, no chairs & tables (for lunch), fun times setting up the AV equipment for recording etc etc. In the end it all turned out well, and our keynote speaker Christine Mackenzie presented an informative discussion on the mainstreaming of library 2.0.
The registration area was very quiet during the second session as all but a few registered attendees had already arrived.

So here I am my first Blog posting ever! How cool.
For those who don't know me (probably everyone), I am one of the student volunteers for the Symposium. I prefer to be called Chele (pronounced shelly), It's easier than the mouthful that is my name. This is my first outing into the social aspects of the web apart from talking to my friends via instant messaging. I am looking forward to learning as much as I possiblly can about all aspects.
Tonight begins the student volunteers j

Have a look at
cartoon #180 from
Shelf Check, a great library cartoon that I really enjoy.
This cartoon says a lot about jumping on the bandwagon of Web 2.0 applications. I think this is fine in your personal life - I have many accounts I have signed up for and stopped using pretty quickly, or have not used at all (in particular - Twitter, Blogger, Jaiku, Zoho, Netvib…

So Google and Wikipedia took you by surprise? Nick Galvin looks into his crystal ball and explains what you need to know to survive the next decade. The list includes the Chumby (my personal favorite), microblogging, EveryBlock, 23AndMe, Peer-to-peer lending, mob, Meraki WiFi, the World Community Grid, Loopt, and the One Laptop per Child program.

Going through the steps of the 13 and 23 things programs, and have played with most of the things listed, but this is my first blog posting - other than commenting on other people's sites. Very liberating! And concerning - who might read it, what do they think, should my post be more contraversial? Anyway, very exciting....
gotta get back to work. Continue

Am waiting to finish up uni for the year and then I promise to explore the tools this site offers as well as all the web 2.0 tools out there. Uni, work and life don't leave much time to play!! Must invest in more Wiggles and Hi5 dvd's to keep young child occupied to leave me time to explore and learn.

OCLC just published Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World.
This report to the OCLC membership summarizes the findings from an international study on online social spaces, including social networking attitudes and habits of both end users and librarians.

There are so many great tools out there, and if you are involved in all of them, you can't possibly use every aspect of each one. For example, I am a member of this network, but also on Facebook, which offers a blog facility, as well as a number of other online communities. I also maintain a photo blog through StumbleUpon. At the same time, I maintain my own independent blog at http://kayc28.wordpress.com . I have enough trouble keeping that one up to date, let alone posting to all of the others…

I've recently discovered that a jpg file inserted into a Word document, then copied from Word and pasted into Paint becomes a rather interesting image. It's not quite pop-art, but it reminds me of something along those lines. I used this technique to create the picture for my page on here - anything to wriggle out of having an actual photo put up! It's amazing how quickly one can be inspired to explore new technology when the need to avoid something unwanted arises! And it's such a pleasant surp…

Social bookmarking is one of the most useful 'web 2.0' technologies for me and one I think could be really useful in libraries. Social bookmarking allows you to share sites you have bookmarked, or added as favourites with everyone.
I use del.icio.us for my social bookmarking, but there are heaps of other sites that do the same thing, including ones from the major search engines.
Social bookmarking is great from me to personally keep track of sites I may want to use, without having them get mes…

I think one of the best things about web/library 2.0 is the rise of blogs. I use blogs to develop my understanding of issues that interest me and to alert me to new ideas and discussions that are happening. I like to be able to read and contribute to the discussion of ideas and problems that blogs allow.
I read all the blogs i follow as RSS feeds, which allows me to easily follow whatever topic is of interest in a number of blogs. There are lots of great library related blogs, that dea…
